Pilates Classes - Develop Your Core

Have you ever watched a ballet performance and wondered how they do it? Or how about the gymnastics competition in the Olympics? It seems that these types of people can make their bodies do things that the rest of us can't even dream of; as if they had muscles the rest of us don't. What's their secret?

There are three words that these people talk about, which identify how they can do what they do. These three words are control, flexibility and core. Control is all about being able to tell your muscles what to do, and having the training to make them do it with precision. All of us have some level of control, but they have a much greater one. Flexibility is just what it sounds like, the ability to bend the joints of your body. The final word, core, is a little harder to understand.

The core is the deep muscles of the abdomen and back, which support our spine; literally the center of our bodies. Ballerinas and gymnasts spend hours of exercise, developing their core. It is from this core that they receive the balance, strength and control to do the things that they do.

Pilates focuses on developing control and the core, two of the things that those incredible athletes and dancers work on. In fact, many ballerinas and gymnasts use Pilates exercises as part of their regular training regime. With it, they are able to strengthen those core muscles, which allow them to do the amazing things that they do.

Many Pilates trainers refer to the core as the "powerhouse." Without a strong powerhouse, it is impossible to have full control over your body's movements. So, to strengthen it, all movements in Pilates begin from this powerhouse and move outward into the limbs.

These movements are highly regimented and very tightly controlled. Every millimeter of every movement is supposed to be done in a controlled manner, not like some exercises where people "snatch" weights or try to make the movements as fast as possible. By maintaining control throughout the movement, the entire muscle or muscle group is worked equally, throughout its range of movement. Ultimately, this builds muscles that are more useful for day-to-day work and lifting.

As the core, or powerhouse is strengthened, it is better able to support the muscles in the extremities, acting as an anchor for every movement. A strong arm, that isn't supported properly can't do much lifting. Likewise, a strong leg that is attached to a core which tires quickly won't get to show its strength. But, when the core is strong, those other muscles can take advantage of that strength and become strong themselves.
